7 WAYS OF DEVELOPING AN INTELLECTUAL MIND

Some of us are tired of being tagged ‘not intellectual’ and of being lost during intellectual discussions. It can feel quite bad and may reduce self-esteem. The truth however is that we all have good brains – it just needs a little conscious work. I have painstakingly presented the following 7 ways of developing an intellectual mind

1.       Leisure Reading: take time to read about things that interest you. It is not like you are reading to remember anything, you just read through ‘lazily’. You may not know, but your brain is picking up new concepts.

2.       Tutorial Videos: watch videos that teach something. It must not be your academic work, it could just be a video explaining something that interests you. These clips are usually short, and take same data as comedy clips, music videos and celebrity chats. Now, it doesn’t mean you should stop your usual videos, rather you should include tutorial videos to your playlist

3.       Thinking: most people never bother to ask the question ‘why?’. They just go from day to day, chit-chatting, watching movies and following celebrity gist. If you really want to develop an intellectual mind, then you have to create some ‘thinking time’. Thinking activates the cells of your vast brain and triggers enquiries. You will be surprised the amount of conclusions and ideas you will get if you simply cut out some chit-chatting and music video for some quiet time of meditation.

4.       Observation: take time to observe what is happening in your environment. Look at a technician fix a generator, a cobbler mend a shoe and other activities around you. You will be surprised at yourself using something you observed a mechanic do to drive home a point during a conversation.

5.       Listening: listening to knowledgeable people speak is a great way to improve your intellect. You could listen to audio files or attend seminars and conferences. Do not ignore seminars in your locality

6.       Do things: it is amazing how much you will learn by doing new things. Whether it is just volunteering to be part of the dinner planning committee, or singing in a choir, or taking a trip; the brain’s cognitive ability is put to work. There is no greater way of activating the brain but by doing things. Keep a small garden, learn to play a new board game, join an exercise group, and attend a workshop.  Do not love sleep too much, do something!

7.       Honor God: now I am not talking about religion. It is about doing the right things. I have observed that doing the right things has a way of improving a person’s thinking pattern and brain power. It seems doing the wrong and unacceptable things detracts from your cognitive ability. So, do the right things and you may not know, you are gaining brain power.
